Wire That's Built Right

We've encountered a variety of techniques that some manufacturers use to reduce costs. The three most common are:

• Copper Clad Aluminum
  Copper clad aluminum (CCA) conductors feature an aluminum core with an outer coating of copper. Aluminum is an inferior material to copper: it has higher electrical resistance, is more susceptible to corrosion, and is much less durable.
• Reduced Conductor Thickness
  For example, selling a 16 gauge speaker cable that is actually only 17 gauge. This can be difficult to detect and makes cable less expensive to manufacture.
• Fake Fire Safety Certifications
  For example, marketing a cable as in-wall, riser, or plenum rated when it is not actually UL Listed and has not actually been tested for fire safety.
